The National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) are collaborating on the Recruiting Older Adults into Research (ROAR) project to encourage older adults and their family caregivers, including underrepresented populations, to consider participating in research.  Organizations can join this project and collaborate with their local area aging services, public health, and research colleagues to spread a message about healthy aging and research participation. CDC Prevention Research Centers Highlight Health Equity Projects
Each year the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) showcases research projects in brief videos that focus on health equity. In 2018, seven CDC Prevention Research Centers, that are members of AAMC, developed videos to demonstrate how research can contribute to narrowing gaps in health and health care. The seven videos describe innovative, community-partnered research projects that explore how people and their communities can avoid or counter risks for chronic illnesses. All of Us Research Program Welcomes the Asian Health Coalition
The All of Us Research Program welcomes the Asian Health Coalition as its newest community engagement partner. In this role, the group will raise awareness about the program and the opportunity for diverse communities to participate in precision medicine research. The Asian Health Coalition is a Chicago-based organization that works to improve the health and well-being of people throughout Illinois. Rural Health and Food Affordability
A recent article from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention titled, National Food Affordability: A County-Level Analysis focused on contributors to food affordability across the rural/urban divide. Community Allostatic Load
I report recently published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation focused on allostatic load at the community level. FDA Launches New Campaign to Warn Kids about the Dangers of E-Cigarettes
The FDA launched a new, comprehensive campaign to warn kids about the dangers of e-cigarette use as part of the agency’s Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan. “The Real Cost” Youth E-Cigarette Prevention Campaign will target nearly 10.7 million at-risk youth through digital platforms, social media, and in-school ads nationwide. Suicide and Refugee Children and Adolescents
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) developed this three-page fact sheet that offers information about risk and protective factors related to suicide and refugee children and adolescents. It describes how refugee children and adolescents who experience suicidal thoughts may not receive the help they need as many refugee families do not seek traditional mental health services or lack access to other sources of support.  The fact sheet also provides strategies for talking with refugee children and adolescents about suicide. Online Health Information Course
DigitalLearn.org, the Public Library Associations’s collection of short self-directed tutorials for end-users to increase their digital literacy, now features a course all about researching health topics on the Internet. Developed in partnership with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM), the new course was designed to help learners understand and evaluate health information while avoiding potentially harmful or misleading sources. Engaging Community Health Workers to Enhance Health Equity
The Community Preventive Services Task Force recommends interventions that engage community health workers to prevent cardiovascular disease or to prevent and control diabetes. In addition to improving health and saving money, these interventions can be used to improve health and enhance health equity. Guiding Principles for the Care of People With or at Risk for Diabetes
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has updated guidelines to assist primary care providers and healthcare teams to deliver diabetes care, including for those at risk. Emphasized are the importance of self-management, of providing patient-centered care and of using shared decision making in diabetes prevention and treatment.
