Cataract commissioning guidance

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists hopes that this guidance will assist those who commission cataract services and those who provide care for patients with cataract. They also hope, that it will help patients and members of the public to understand and contribute to the debate about how cataract services should be provided in the future.

CONCLUSIONS: Here, we report an additional XMC family due to a novel mutation in the CHRDL1 gene. Mild anterior segment anomalies were observed in two heterozygous carriers demonstrating for the first time a CHRDL1-linked phenotype in females. A detailed comparison of the clinical and genetic features of this pedigree with those observed in previously published XMC cases is also presented.PMID:34844512 | DOI:10.1080/13816810.2021.2002917

Purpose: To investigate the association between different types of posterior staphyloma (PS) and refractive error (RE) after cataract surgery in patients with high myopia. Methods: This retrospective study included 113 eyes of 113 highly myopic patients with PS. PS was detected using a wide-field fundus imaging system. PS was classified into wide macular, narrow macular, and other types. RE equaled the actual spherical equivalent (SE) minus the targeted SE values 3 months after cataract surgery. Results: The rates of wide macular, narrow macular, and other types of PS were 46.02, 39.82, and 14.16%, respectively. There were n...

Epigenetic mechanisms modulate gene expression and function without altering the base sequence of DNA. These reversible, heritable, and environment-influenced mechanisms generate various cell types during development and orchestrate the cellular responses to external stimuli by regulating the expression of genome. Also, the epigenetic modifications influence common pathological and physiological responses including inflammation, ischemia, neoplasia, aging and neurodegeneration etc. In recent past, the field of epigenetics has gained momentum and become an increasingly important area of biomedical research As far as eye is ...

CONCLUSION: AS-OCT is a non-invasive technique that allows to determine IOL position and IOL-uveal contact in selected cases of UGH syndrome. Considering AS-OCT and UBM advantages and limitations, AS-OCT should be used as first imaging modality when clinical diagnosis is uncertain. When UGH diagnosis cannot be verified using AS-OCT, UBM should be performed.PMID:34841924 | DOI:10.1177/11206721211063738

CONCLUSIONS: Most diagnostic clusters showed a similar decrease. Clusters that included vision-threating conditions (retina, neuro-ophthalmology, and uveitis) remained mostly stable. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the diagnosis of adenoviral conjunctivitis decreased nearly 10 times. This fact may represent a decrease in the transmission of these infections.PMID:34840824 | PMC:PMC8616649 | DOI:10.1155/2021/8023361

CONCLUSION: Panel-based exome sequencing revealed three likely pathogenic variants in three unrelated Chinese families with congenital cataracts. These data expand the genetic spectrum associated with congenital cataracts.PMID:34840822 | PMC:PMC8612798 | DOI:10.1155/2021/3847409

CONCLUSION: Phacoviscocanalostomy achieved significant IOP reduction and visual improvement in both POAG and PEXG patients. Our results indicated that in terms of IOP reduction, this procedure was more effective in treating PEXG.PMID:34840679 | PMC:PMC8593542 | DOI:10.18502/jovr.v16i4.9746

We present four clinical cases of post-surgical CME (three following vitrectomy and one following cataract surgery in a vitrectomized eye 2 years ago). All of them had been previously treated with an average of four injections of intravitreal dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex®), with repeated recurrence of CME. After treatment with Iluvien, three cases showed improvement of both visual acuity and macular anatomy, with resolution of the macular edema. One patient required additional treatment with Ozurdex during follow-up, further improving CME. Two of the cases required topical pressure lowering treatment, and none requir...
