Percutaneous Splenule Ablation for Recurrent Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Following Splenectomy: A Case Series

Idiopathic thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired disorder defined by autoantibody-mediated destruction of platelets (1). ITP may be primary or secondary, with 1 in 10,000 diagnoses every year. Splenectomy is an effective therapy for ITP in patients in whom the first-line and second-line medical therapies have failed. When patients fail to respond to splenectomy or have recurrent symptoms, it may be due to residual accessory spleens (ASs) (2). ASs allow for continued platelet clearance and autoantibody production and occur in 14.3% –30.1% of patients with ITP (2,3).
