Trauma to or infection of any part of the musculoskeletal system, in general, falls under the category of urgent or emergent orthopedic care. Timing and immediacy of treatment depend on the severity of injury, which can range from minor, such as a strain or a sprain, to critical, when survival of the limb or the patient is uncertain. This issue reviews injuries and conditions that require urgent attention to preserve life, limb, and functional outcomes.
