“Out of touch speech” shows PM has no idea of the issues affecting ordinary families, says UNISON

Commenting on Boris Johnson’s speech today (Wednesday) to the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said: “This out-of-touch speech shows the Prime Minister has no grasp of the very real financial fears keeping people awake at night. “Living costs are spiralling, in part due to labour shortages in key parts of the economy. None of these problems will fix themselves overnight. Consumers are paying the price, with the poorest hit hardest. “The government says employers struggling to recruit should offer higher wages. It’s high time the Prime Minister took his own advice. An above-inflation wage boost could help pull the severely understaffed NHS and social care back from the brink. “The public sector pay freeze must be ditched too. Allowing essential worker pay to fall so far behind wages elsewhere in the economy spells disaster for the public services we depend upon.” Notes to editors: – UNISON is the UK’s largest union with more than 1.3 million members providing public services in education, local government, the NHS, police service and energy. They are employed in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
