The sternum has 3 component bones: manubrium, body, and xyphoid. The manubrium has 3 major functions. First, it provides stabilization of the shoulder joints. Second, it provides a hinge joint with the sternal body that allows movement during respiration. Finally, it provides the anchor for the sternocleidomastoid muscles and strap muscles for neck flexion.
