Central versus peripheral corneal thickness – A White spot on the corneal (anatomy) map

It has been suggested that an expanded knowledge of corneal microanatomy will influence advancements in corneal surgery [1]. A similar thought could be applied to the contact lens field. There is a considerable thickness difference between the central and peripheral cornea, as shown in Fig. 1. This significant dimensional difference may translate into regional differences in how the cornea will react to physiological changes and diseases.
