HHS: Proposed Modifications to the HIPAA Privacy Rule To Support, and Remove Barriers to, Coordinated Care and Individual Engagement

Notice of proposed rulemaking from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) modifying the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule to promote care coordination, case management, and the transition to value-based care. Among other things, proposed changes include increasing permissible disclosures to improve care coordination and case management, strengthening individuals' rights to inspect their own protected health information (PHI) and clarifying covered entities' abilities to disclose PHI to social service agencies and other third parties that provide health-related services. Comments are due by March 22, 2021.
