Preparing for the Worst: Universal Algorithm for Robotic Surgery Emergency Conversion

There is an increasing trend towards more minimally invasive thoracic and abdominal surgeries, particularly with robotic surgical systems. Robotic surgery is an attractive surgical platform for complex procedures in both the chest and abdomen. The enhanced degrees of freedom in motion, motion scaling, and the three-dimensional vision are welcomed upgrades from the limited two-dimensional vision and restricted range of motion previously experienced with traditional thoracoscopic and laparoscopic techniques [1-4].
