Although knowledge of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-Cas system has been applied in many research areas, comprehensive studies of this system in Salmonella, particularly in analysis of antibiotic resistance, have not been reported. In this work, 75 Salmonella isolates obtained from broilers or broilers products were characterized to determine their antimicrobial susceptibilities, antibiotic resistance gene profiles, and CRISPR array diversities, and genotyping was explored. In total, 80.00% (60/75) of the strains were multidrug resistant, and the main pattern observed in the isolates ...

J Med Microbiol. 2021 Sep;70(9). doi: 10.1099/jmm.0.001410.ABSTRACTA review of African swine fever (ASF) was conducted, including manifestations of disease, its transmission and environmental persistence of ASF virus. Findings on infectious doses of contemporary highly-pathogenic strains isolated from outbreaks in Eastern Europe were included. Published data on disinfectant susceptibility of ASF virus were then compared with similar findings for selected other infectious agents, principally those used in the UK disinfectant approvals tests relating to relevant Disease Orders for the control of notifiable and zoonotic disea...

ConclusionGiven the high coverage and the limited impact of CIDTs on the referral of isolates, we may conclude that the NRC can confidently monitor the epidemiological situation and identify outbreaks throughout the country. These findings may guide the decision to implement WGS at the level of the NRC and may improve estimates of the true burden of salmonellosis in Belgium.

Food Microbiol. 2021 Dec;100:103871. doi: 10.1016/j.fm.2021.103871. Epub 2021 Jul 16.ABSTRACTBetween November 2018 and May 2019, Canada experienced a nationwide salmonellosis outbreak linked to the presence of Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis in frozen profiteroles. Analysis of the implicated food products revealed low levels of Salmonella ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 MPN/100g. Water activity and pH of the food samples ranged from 0.9479 to 0.9867 and 4.6-6.8 respectively indicating conditions conducive to bacterial growth. Higher levels of the hygiene indicators Enterobacteriaceae and coliforms were associated with Salmone...

This study developed mathematical models to predict the survival of four-strain cocktail of Salmonella on whole cucumbers at different temperature and relative humidity (RH) conditions. The strains were Salmonella Newport H1275 and Stanley H0558 (sprout outbreaks), Montevideo G4639 (tomato outbreak), and Saintpaul 02-517-1 (cantaloupe outbreak). Inoculated cucumbers were placed in desiccators containing saturated salt solution to create controlled RH environments (~15, 50, 100% RH) at 7, 14, and 21 °C, and enumerated at time intervals ranging from 0 to 240 h. Predictive models were developed using Baranyi and Roberts e...
