When Joe Silverman developed Crohn’s disease at age 21, the symptoms started out mild. While the sight of blood in his stools initially freaked him out, what really bothered him was the frequent abdominal pain and bloating that occurred as his condition progressed to moderate and then severe. Dietary changes didn’t make a difference, so he began taking prescription oral anti-inflammatory drugs that are often used to treat certain bowel diseases, which alleviated but didn’t eliminate his discomfort. He started using prescription steroid suppositories to cope with flare-ups of the inflammatory bowel disease...

CONCLUSIONS: Otherwise healthy infants may show signs of dysphagia and not develop later illness. Parents can thus be counseled on the implications of dysphagia in a previously healthy infant. Our findings provide comparative statistics for future research in pediatric dysphagia.PMID:34553623 | DOI:10.1177/00034894211047786

AbstractDespite ongoing evolution in technique and a low mortality rate, clinicians may care for patients who suffer late complications (> 90 days of surgery) after bariatric surgery. Endoscopic techniques are used to identify and manage many of the late complications of the two most commonly performed bariatric surgeries: sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Stenosis at the incisura angularis and gastroesophageal reflux disease may occur in patients who have undergone a sleeve gastrectomy. Patients who underwent a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass can suffer marginal ulceration, gastrojejunal anastomotic stricture, ...

CONCLUSIONS: The rate of development of symptomatic GERD after successful H. pylori eradication is low over long-term follow-up and is easily controlled by vonoprazan therapy. However, patients with smoking habits, functional dyspepsia, hiatal hernia, or severe gastric atrophy should be followed carefully after eradication.PMID:34547219 | DOI:10.1080/00365521.2021.1975310

In this study, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) disodium was first chosen as catalyst to convert psoralenoside (PO) to psoralen (PSO) for increasing the extraction yield of PSO. An efficient continuous system for synchronous transformation and extraction of PSO from fig leaves applying microwave-assisted EDTA disodium (MAE-EDTA) was developed. The optimal MAE-EDTA condition was obtained: EDTA disodium concentration of 0.07 mol·L-1, ethanol volume fraction of 56%, extraction time of 16 min, and extraction temperature of 70 °C by single factor experiments and response surface method (RSM). Under the optimal ...

ConclusionThe results of this study indicate that esophageal clearance may affect the treatment outcome of LF. Based on the findings of MII-pH, the longest reflux time and the number of refluxes longer than 5  min were important factors influencing the therapeutic effect, whereas based on the HRM, the DCI value was most important.
