A Simplified Technique for Surgical Treatment of Saccular Venous Aneurysms

Popliteal venous aneurysms (PVAs) are rare but frequently prone to causing life threatening pulmonary embolism. A 46 year old man, treated with a prolonged course of oral anticoagulation therapy for massive pulmonary embolism (negative for thrombophilia), was found to have a 38  mm diameter saccular PVA. No evidence of aneurysm thrombosis was detected. Owing to the risk of recurrence, surgical correction was proposed. As traditional vein clamping and running suture carries a risk of developing shrinkage and the longitudinal suture line may be irregular, a stapled aneurysm orrhaphy was considered.
