The advent of the Major Trauma network in the United Kingdom (UK) has been heralded as providing significant improvements to patient care on many levels [1 –4]. This is particularly evident in the realm of orthoplastic care, where orthopaedic trauma surgeons work closely with reconstructive plastic surgeons to combine their knowledge and expertise to provide more timely treatment, reduced complications and better functional outcomes [2]. Within the U nited Kingdom National Health Service (NHS), each patient admission cost is calculated using a complex system of codes based on clinical diagnosis and medical interventions.
