Primum non nocere. This oft-quoted tenet reminds us that above all, we as physicians must do no harm. All treatments must take into account the patient, the disease, and the expected outcome. Surgery offers the best (or the only) benefit for some diseases, but since all surgery includes harm, we must responsively evaluate the risk-benefit ratio.
