Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer type in humans. Various factors play a role in BCC occurrence, but sunlight exposure is the most common etiologic factor. This case series presents three patients who had scarring after severe traumas (a deep abrasion, burn, and puncture injury); a long time after the respective traumatic events, a BCC occurred in the scar tissue. The lesions were excised, and BCCs were diagnosed based on histopathology. Although several etiologic factors may play a role in trauma-related BCC, the main mechanism remains unclear. A correct diagnosis with biopsy and an assessment of t...

Dear Candid Caregiver: My mom passed two years ago and my dad hasn’t done well since. Recently he had a stroke. My sister, who lives 1,000 miles away, came out for mom’s funeral, and she also visited for a few days after dad’s stroke, but she has a job and a family and couldn’t stay long. Now, dad’s been diagnosed with vascular dementia. Realistically, I’m the sole caregiver. I have two teenaged children, a husband who is, so far, supportive, and a job. I’m already beginning to feel burned out after just a few months. What can I do to help myself get through this and still take car...

(American Thoracic Society) Traditional stoves that burn biomass materials and are not properly ventilated, which are widely used in developing nations where cooking is done indoors, have been shown to significantly increase indoor levels of harmful PM2.5 (miniscule atmospheric particulates) and carbon monoxide (CO) and to stimulate biological processes that cause lung inflammation and may lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to new research published online in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society.

Kazis, Colleen M. Ryan, Jeffrey C. SchneiderAbstractIntroductionDespite many advances in burn care, the development of extremity contracture remains a common and vexing problem. Extremity contractures have been documented in up to one third of severely burned patients at discharge. However, little is known about the long-term impact of these contractures. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of extremity contract...

In this study the comparison of effects of alkaline pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse on anaerobic co-digestion of bagasse with cow dung is investigated. The Bagasse is pretreated with 2%(w/v) solution of NaOH and 2%(w/v) solution of Ca(OH)2 at room temperature for one day. Alkali pretreated bagasse is then mixed with cow dung in ratio1: 2 and the solid to water is mixed in ratio 1: 3. Then the biogas production from the slurry formed is observed at 35°C and 55°C. Results showed that biogas production is highest from NaOH treated Bagasse followed by Ca(OH)2 treatment and without treated bagasse at 35°C. Further...

(NOVI SANZHARY, Ukraine) — Ukraine’s effort to quarantine more than 70 people evacuated from China over the new virus outbreak plunged into chaos Thursday as local residents opposing the move hurled stones at the evacuees and clashed with police. Buses carrying evacuees were finally able to reach the designated place of quarantine after hours of clashes. The masked evacuees, exhausted by the long journey, were peekin...
