Introduction

Aortic surgery is still one of the most challenging and interesting field of cardiac surgery, especially in terms of technical progression and outcome improvements. While in the past extensive diseases of the aorta were only partially treated, nowadays patients suffering from degenerative aneurysm or aortic dissection routinely undergo surgery. The introduction of the traditional elephant trunk technique allowed for an easier second stage procedure via left thoracotomy. However, a big step was made with the introduction of hybrid prostheses and the development of the frozen elephant trunk approach.
