Number of people who are obese in England has almost doubled in 20 years
Around 13million people over the age of 16 were considered obese in 2017 - up from the 6.9million recorded back in 1997, according to the analysis by the charity Diabetes UK.
CONCLUSIONS In middle-aged and elderly individuals without CKD, arterial stiffness determined by obesity, dyslipidemia and increased pulse pressure, was significantly associated with increased serum levels of cystatin C. PMID: 31793519 [PubMed - in process]
Conclusion: Prevalence of hypertension was found to be higher among the diabetic group compared to the non- diabetic group (44.8% vs 42.6%), though the difference between the two was not very substantial. We therefore conclude that half of the urban poor are hypertensive even if they are not diabetic. PMID: 31793268 [PubMed - in process]
Conclusion and Significance: Among the anthropometric markers namely BMI and AG, AG is a better predictor of DM risk. Therefore AG should also be considered along with HbA1c for predicting DM risk. PMID: 31793264 [PubMed - in process]
This study focused on differences between obese individuals with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D+ and T2D–, respectively) on the transcriptome level. Subjects included were 35 T2D– patients with obesity and 35 T2D+ patients with obesity with the same body mass index (BMI). The study was based on the transcription analysis of mRNA and microRNAs (miRs) by RNAseq. In the first step, we performed RNAseq of miRs, in the second step, we analyzed only those mRNA, which appeared targets for significant miRs from the first step. All RNAseq results were validated by qPCR. There were seven miRs differently expressed with adjusted p-value
In this study, we found that FGF-1 had positive effects on glucose intolerance, hepatic lipid accumulation, and insulin resistance, while it markedly repressed cytokine secretion (TNF-α and IL-6) in serum and reduced liver inflammation in diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice. Further, FGF-1 treatment significantly represses TNF-α-induced insulin resistance in vitro and in vivo. These results indicate that FGF-1 likely ameliorates insulin resistance via a mechanism that is independent of its glucose-lowering activity. Subsequent experiments demonstrated that FGF-1 ameliorated insulin resistance, and inflammation was ...

Lieberman, Yi-Guang ChenSummaryHuman genetic studies implicate interleukin-27 (IL-27) in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. To further define the role of IL-27 in T1D, we generated non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice deficient in IL-27 or IL-27Rα. In contrast to wild-type NOD mice, both NOD.Il27−/− and NOD.Il27ra−/− strains ...
