By ANISH KOKA, MD Mr. Smith has a problem.  He can’t see.  Even this cardiologist knows why.  The not so subtle evidence lies in the cloudy lens in front of his pupils.  He is afflicted with cataracts that obstruct his vision to the point he can’t really do his job refurbishing antique furniture safely.  His other problem is that he hates doctors. He hasn’t had reason to see one for more than a decade.  He’s 68, takes no medications, smokes a pack of cigarettes a day, and is a master of one word answers. He’s in my office because he needs a medical eval...

High prevalence, peculiar etiopathogenesis, and ineffective therapies have contributed to the fact that genital warts are one of the most challenging issues in modern medicine. This prospective study was aimed at determining the clinical efficacy of combination therapy with 0.5% podophyllotoxin solution and liquid nitrogen cryotherapy in the local treatment of genital warts in men. One hundred and ten consecutive male patients with genital warts were randomly assigned to two groups. The control group consisted of two subgroups: 30 patients treated with podophyllotoxin and 30 patients treated with cryotherapy. The experimen...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of spores and/or hyphae in benign cutaneous tumors (CT) and compare their presence in malignant cutaneous tumors. In this cross-sectional study we evaluated 328 CTs positive for spores and/or hyphae. The results show that the greatest number of involved CTs which contained spores and/or hyphae were found in compound nevi 181 (55.18%) and seborrheic warts 61 (18.60%). No spores and/or hyphae were observed in the melanoma samples, and a very low prevalence was found in squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) (2; 0.61%) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (1; 0.30%). The presence of spore...

Cutaneous warts are particularly difficult to treat with conventional treatment on sites such as the palms, soles, and periungual region. Immunotherapy boosts the host immune response and helps clear warts with less chance of recurrence. Vitamin D plays an important role in proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes. The aim of this observational study was to study the efficacy and safety of intralesional vitamin D immunotherapy in the treatment of recalcitrant palmoplantar and periungual warts. Patients who had palmoplantar and periungual warts for more than 6 months and were non-responsive to at least two convent...

Tissue homeostasis and regeneration in theDrosophila midgut is regulated by a diverse array of signaling pathways including the Hippo pathway. Hippo signaling restricts intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation by sequestering the transcription co-factor Yorkie (Yki) in the cytoplasm, a factor required for rapid ISC proliferation under injury-induced regeneration. Nonetheless, the mechanism of Hippo-mediated midgut homeostasis and whether canonical Hippo signaling is involved in ISC basal proliferation are less characterized. Here we identify Lola as a transcription factor acting downstream of Hippo signaling to restrict IS...
