Introduction

Leiomyoma of the esophagus often become symptomatic necessitating their removal. As tools and technique progress, endoscopic techniques are being applied to progressively more complicated esophageal pathologies. As one of the pioneers in this technique, building on his extensive PEOM experience, Lee Swanstrom and his co-authors describe the steps and pitfalls in the endoscopic resection of submucosal leiomyomas. This technique is truly innovative, as the entire operation can be performed endoscopically, avoiding skin incisions as well as the recovery associated with the standard approach to this pathology.
