Previous studies indicate that patients with a more negative perception of their illness tend to respond less favorably to treatment, but little is known about whether illness perceptions differ based on the type of hand or wrist conditions. Therefore, we compared illness perceptions between patients scheduled to undergo surgery for 4 illnesses in hand surgery: carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC OA), Dupuytren disease, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and trigger finger syndrome (TFS). We hypothesized there would be differences in illness perception between these patient groups.

The severity of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may be categorised in a number of ways utilising one of a range of presently available grading tools. The grading systems proposed by Bland and Padua are the most c...

Today's paper is authored by the Covalent Bioscience science team, and is an overview of the science underlying their catalytic antibody (or catabody) approach to clearing amyloids of various sorts from aged tissues. It isn't open access, unfortunately, but the paper is, as usual, available to the world thanks to the ethical civil disobedience of the Sci-Hub team. Amyloids are solid deposits formed by one of the very small number of proteins in the body that can become misfolded or otherwise altered in ways that cause other molecules of the same protein to also alter in the same way. These errant proteins aggregate into st...

ConclusionThis method can be widely applied to solve the statistical problem when the gold standard is lacking, and the outside reference standard is not completely reliable.

We agree with your comments about MCID and concerns about using the distribution-based method to calculate MCID.1 As you note, this is a statistical measurement, which may or may not always be clinically relevant or the same as an MCID calculated using an anchor-based approach. We do feel that outcomes based on the patient perception are important, and this is why we also chose to calculate our PROMIS MCIDs using MCIDs determined from previously validated patient-reported outcome measures for carpal tunnel syndrome: the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire and the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire.

ConclusionThe effect of acupuncture plus night splinting may show significant reduction on pain but failed to show significant differences compared with night splinting in patients with CTS. Further studies with larger sample size may confirm the findings.

Anyone who has ever had to wear a cast can attest to the inconveniences they experience, such as difficulty in showering because the casts are not waterproof, not being able to swim, the heaviness of the cast, and not being able to scratch the inevitable itches. But now, with a new Red Dot Award-winning technology that uses 3-D printing, plaster casts may become a thing of the past, at least when it comes to treating sprains or light fractures. Xkelet casts are 3-D printed using a SLS 3-D printer with the waterproof and hypoallergenic PA2200 plastic material, which is compatible with ISO 10993-1. The casts are lightweight,...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewCarpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compressive neuropathy encountered by hand and upper extremity surgeons. The predominant presentation includes symptomatic paresthesias in the median nerve distribution of the affected hand, frequently causing nocturnal disturbances. Surgical treatment requires division of the transverse carpal ligament, which can be performed through open and endoscopic means. Endoscopic techniques have evolved significantly since they were first introduced in the late 1980s. This manuscript reviews the literature to summarize the current state of carpal tunnel surgery.Rec...
