Comic-style brochure may help surgical patients understand their procedure

A new comic-style brochure helped patients reduce stress by explaining cardiac catheterization, a procedure that inserts a stent to open a narrowed artery to increase blood flow.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Sex differences in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have been reported, but little is known about the situation in the Netherlands. METHODS: This registry is a merge of available data on ACS patients in the electronic data capture systems of 11 centres with 24/7 interventional cardiology services. We included patients>18 years undergoing a cardiac catheterisation between 2010-2012. We evaluated sex differences in clinical and procedural characteristics and 1‑year mortality. RESULTS: A total of 29,265 ACS patients (8,720 women and 20,545 men) were registered...

Discussion of Figure-1: As per Dr. Smith — ECG #1 showed marked sinus tachycardia at ~140/minute — with diffuse ST segment elevation.I often find it difficult to determine the precise amount of ST elevation when the heart rate is very fast. For clarity — I ’ve added short horizontal RED lines in Figure-1 to show what I took as the “baseline” for assessing the amount of J-point ST elevation for the 2 ECGs in this figure. It may be especially difficult when there is marked tachycardia to identify the J-point that defines the number of millim...

This study assessed the effects of post-AMI carvedilol and TH co-administration on oxidative stress and cardiac function as well as whether those effects were synergistic. Male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: sham-operated (SHAM), infarcted (MI), infarcted + TH (MI + TH), infarcted + carvedilol (MI + C) and infarcted + C + TH (MI + C + TH). Two days post-surgery, the SHAM and MI groups received saline, and treated groups received their respective treatments by gavage for 12 days. The animals were submitted to echocardiographic evalua...

We report a case of a 23-year-old male with failing Fontan circulation who was taken to the catheterization lab to better evaluate the Fontan circulation and hemodynamics. Catheterization revealed arteriovenous malformations exclusively present in the right lung leading to the consideration of placing stents to direct the inferior vena cava flow through the Fontan circuit to the right pulmonary artery (RPA), thus increasing the RPA concentration of the hepatic factor. However, comprehensive 4D-Flow MRI analyses indicated sufficient distribution of the hepatic flow between branch pulmonary arteries, and consequently no furt...

Abstract Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is an end result of a diverse array of complex clinical conditions, which invoke hemodynamic and pathophysiological changes in the pulmonary vasculature. Many patients' symptoms begin with dyspnea on exertion for which screening tests like chest roentgenograms and more definitive non-invasive tests like CT scans are ordered initially. It is imperative that clinicians are cognizant of subtle clues on these imaging modalities that alert them to the possibility of PH. These clues may serve as a stepping stone towards more advanced non-invasive (ECHO) and invasive (right heart cath...

Conclusions: MCS usage in these patients carries a high mortality in the early post-implantation period. However, there is a significant benefit to patients who survive the initial bridging period to recovery or destination therapy. PMID: 30962998 [PubMed]

ConclusionDoppler resting and exercise echocardiography may provide a reliable, noninvasive method for determining resting and exercise sPAP, mPAP, and PVR in SSc patients, although it may underestimate or overestimate these values in some individuals. Doppler echocardiography does not replace RHC for definite hemodynamic assessment of suspected PH.
