Reynolds, Joaquin N. LugoAbstractThere is increasing evidence that seizures during early development can impact ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted from neonatal mice. However, most of the effects of early-life seizures have been reported using chemoconvulsants that produce continuous seizures (status epilepticus). In the present study, we evaluated the impact of different seizure frequency loads during early-life voca...

ConclusionsThe present study indicates that IDD occurs in high frequency in PWE with a substantial overlap of IDD with depressive and anxiety disorders. The study highlights the importance of the observer-based systematic approach for diagnosing IDD and the usage of operationalized diagnostic criteria for psychiatric comorbidities in PWE. Future research should be directed at validating whether IDD is nosologically independent of other psychiatric conditions.

Conclusion: We screened 12 receptor tyrosine kinases inhibitors, and EGFR/ErbB-2 and cFMS inhibitors were identified as novel antiepileptic compounds. Significance: This epilepsy-on-a-chip system provides the means for rapid dissection of complex signaling pathways in epileptogenesis, paving the way for high-throughput antiepileptic drug discovery.

(CNN) — The first medical device to treat childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, was OK’d Friday by the US Food and Drug Administration. Designated for children ages 7 to 12 who are not currently on medication for the disorder, the device delivers a low-level electrical pulse to the parts of the brain responsible for ADHD symptoms. “This new device offers a safe, non-drug option for treatment of ADHD in pediatric patients through the use of mild nerve stimulation, a first of its kind,” Carlos Peña, director of the Division of Neurological and Physical Medicine Devices in...

AbstractTo assess the risk of epilepsy recurrence after withdrawal from antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), researchers extensively studied recurrence-related risk factors, including electroencephalogram (EEG) during AED withdrawal. The relationship between EEG and epilepsy recurrence is controversial. We used meta-analysis to determine the correlation between EEG during AED withdrawal and epilepsy recurrence. A total of seven studies met the criteria for inclusion. The Newcastle –Ottawa Scale was used to conduct the research quality evaluation. Seven hundred three patients were included in meta-analysis. Patients with abnor...

In this study we reprogrammed fibroblasts from a 30-year-old male patient with DDE carrying a point mutation (c.890G > A, p.Arg297Gln) in KCNA2 to induced pluripotent stem cells. Pluripotency state of the cells was verified by the capability to differentiate into all three germ layers and the expression of several pluripotency markers on RNA and protein levels.
