Obesity is a complex chronic disease associated with metabolic dysfunction and significant morbidity and mortality [1]. In 2016 alone, nearly 40% of adults worldwide aged 18 years and older were considered overweight [2]. Bariatric surgery is the only long-term treatment for severe obesity and its metabolic sequela [3]. With rising obesity rates, it is not surprising that the number of bariatric surgeries performed have increased dramatically over the last two decades [4,5].
