Motivational Interviewing: A New Therapeutic Approach for Community Paramedics

One of the most challenging obstacles community paramedics face is trying not to fix all of their patients' problems. For many, EMS is a desirable industry because it offers the ability to help others in need. But what do you do when you are faced with a patient who doesn't want help, is resistant, or is ambivalent to change? Motivational interviewing is a therapeutic approach that moves an individual away from uncertainty and toward positive decisions based on accomplishing established goals. It allows the community paramedic the ability to empower their patients to make changes in order to ensure program success through patient autonomy, collaboration, and evocation. Come learn more about Motivational Interviewing, and participate in a beta-test for NAEMT’s upcoming Community Paramedicine course!
