Conclusions Patients with chronic venous ulcers exhibit frailty or pre-frailty and the components that comprise the condition of frailty in this population are exhaustion, low physical activity, and muscle weakness. Sarcopenia was identified in a small proport ion of the patients.

by Sarah Guth, Kathryn A. Hanley, Benjamin M. Althouse, Mike Boots Pathogens originating from wildlife (zoonoses) pose a significant public health burden, comprising the majority of emerging infectious diseases. Efforts to control and prevent zoonotic disease have traditionally focused on animal-to-human transmission, or “spillover.” However, in the modern er a, increasing international mobility and commerce facilitate the spread of infected humans, nonhuman animals (hereafter animals), and their products worldwide, thereby increasing the risk that zoonoses will be introduced to new geographic areas. Imported ...

This study aimed to identify new viral agents within Aedes aegypti mosquito in a city of the Amazonian region, where it is highly endemic. Metagenomic investigation was performed on 60 mosquito pools and viral RNA sequences present in their microbiota were characterized using genomic and phylogenetic tools. In total, we identified five putative novel virus species related to the Sobemovirus genus, Iflavirus genus and Permutatetraviridae family. These findings indicate a diverse taxonomy of viruses present in the mosquito microbiota of the Amazon, the region with the greatest invertebrate diversity in the world.

The spatial spread of many mosquito-borne diseases occurs by focal spread at the scale of a few hundred meters and over longer distances due to human mobility. The relative contributions of different spatial s...

In this study, we examined the importance of the microtubule network during the early steps of infection and dissected the intracellular trafficking behavior of CHIKV particles during cell entry. We observed two distinct CHIKV intracellular trafficking patterns prior to membrane hemifusion. Whereas half of the CHIKV virions remained static during cell entry and fused in the cell periphery, the other half showed fast-directed microtubule-dependent movement prior to delivery to Rab5-positive early endosomes and predominantly fused in the perinuclear region of the cell. Disruption of the microtubule network reduced the number...

Vector-borne diseases are responsible for over a billion infections each year and nearly one million deaths. Mosquito-borne dengue virus, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis, Zika, Chikungunya, and Rift Valley Fever viruses constitute major public health problems in regions with high densities of arthropod vectors. During the initial step of the transmission cycle, vector, host, and virus converge at the bite site, where local immune cells interact with the vector's saliva. Hematophagous mosquito saliva is a mixture of bioactive components known to modulate vertebrate hemostasis, immunity, and inflammation during the insect's...

Infections caused by arboviruses are considered a public health problem, due to their wide distribution and high morbidity and mortality rates (Acosta-Bas and G ómez-Cordero 2005; Usme-Ciro et al. 2012). Between 2013 and 2016, CHIKV and ZIKV introduction caused major epidemics in America (Paniz-Mondolfi et al. 2016; Rodriguez-Morales et al. 2016). ZIKV was identified in Brazil in March 2015, and a year later it had spread to 33 countries in America, causin g outbreaks of febrile illness that clinically resembles DENV and CHIKV disease.

Authors: Tozan Y, Sjödin H, Muñoz ÁG, Rocklöv J Abstract INTRODUCTION: We are witnessing an alarming increase in the burden and range of mosquito-borne arboviral diseases. The transmission dynamics of arboviral diseases is highly sensitive to climate and weather and is further affected by non-climatic factors such as human mobility, urbanization, and disease control. As evidence also suggests, climate-driven changes in species interactions may trigger evolutionary responses in both vectors and pathogens with important consequences for disease transmission patterns. ochipa I, Villa-Ruano N Abstract Dyssodia decipiens is one of the seven recognized species within the Dyssodia genus which has economic and social relevance in Mexico. Herein we report on the volatile characterization and pharmacological activity of D. decipiens . The annual essential oils (2017-2019) contained verbenone (30.8-60.9%), limonene (5.6-35.5%), β-caryophyllene (7.8-19.8%) and linalool (4.5-12.4%) as major constituents along the studied years. Antifungal properties were probed on Candida albicans ATCC 90028, ATCC 10231 (fluconazole resistant) and IS1-IS5 (five clinical isolates). Flower essential o...
