Comparison of Laparoscopic to Robotic Bariatric Surgery in Community Hospital Program

Objectives: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass and revisional bariatric surgery are the most popular bariatric surgical procedures performed today for treatment of morbid obesity, accounting for 90.7% of all bariatric surgeries in 2016. Many bariatric patients pose unique issues for the surgeon due to body habitus. Robotic surgery is gaining popularity among bariatric surgeons as a way to perform many of these surgeries. The enhanced visualization and ergonomic dexterity may offer these surgeons advantages in the morbidly obese.
