Incisional Hernia Prevention Using Dehydrated Amniotic Membrane in Rat Model

Incisional hernias (IH) develop in 15% to 20% of laparotomies. In rat models, growth factors reduce IH rates by 50% but this has not translated into clinical practice. Dehydrated human amnion-chorion membrane (dHACM) releases all previously tested growth factors and is routinely used by surgeons. To test our hypothesis that prophylactic dHACM would reduce IH rates, we performed a double-blinded, prospective randomized control trial (RCT) using a validated rat model.
