Discussion of “Traumatic thoracic rib cage hernias: Operative management and proposal for a new anatomic-based grading system”

I am very pleased to be asked to discuss this comprehensive experience of the operative management of traumatic chest wall hernias. Dr William Long of Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, OR is a pioneer in the management of chest wall injuries in general and complex deformities and defects in particular. My recent experience at 2 different trauma centers was to encounter 1 or 2 patients per year with these injuries. Some years there were none. I cannot say whether the frequency of these injuries is increasing.
