Abstract Older adults in Latin America are at an increased risk of hospitalisation, ill health, catastrophic disability and death due to vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza, herpes zoster, and pneumonia. The Latin American Adult Immunisation Advocacy Summit, held in Mexico City, gathered 40 experts in health, ageing and immunisation from 12 Latin American countries to explore good practices of adult vaccination, key country and regional barriers, and strategies to overcome these barriers. The Summit comprised of introductory lectures, plenary panels and breakout sessions with the overarching goal of imp...

In this report, adjuvants that are components of vaccines licensed in the EU will be presented and their mode of action will be discussed.Aluminum salts have been used for almost a century as vaccine adjuvants. In recent years numerous novel immune-stimulating substances have been developed and integrated into licensed human vaccines. These novel adjuvants are not only intended to generally increase the vaccine-induced antibody titers, but are also aimed at modulating and triggering a specific immune response. The search for innovative adjuvants was considerably stimulated during development of pandemic influenza...

Abstract Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a neurotropic and lymphotropic alpha herpesvirus that causes varicella and herpes zoster (HZ). At a primary infection, VZV causes varicella in young children. Reactivation of latent VZV in sensory ganglia causes painful HZ in elderly people, occasionally leading to a serious complication, postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). A live attenuated VZV vaccine, the first vaccine licensed for the prevention of HZ and PHN is not very effective, while a recombinant subunit vaccine provides higher and longer protection against HZ. In the present study, we developed a new adjuvant system CIA...

This report proposes strategies to increase awareness of HZ and its vaccine, enhance vaccine uptake, and educate regarding the role of prevention, including immunization, as a means to "age well". A key strategy that could rapidly and easily be implemented at low cost is co-administration of HZ vaccine with other vaccines scheduled in the target age group. The scientific evidence surrounding the safety and efficacy of co-administration is discussed. Other strategies, such as active calls, publicity campaigns and national vaccine registries are also outlined. There is a compelling need for a full consensus documen...
