Chuetas are the descendants of the condemned Crypto-Jews in the last Inquisition processes in Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Despite their conversion, they were discriminated against and secluded by their immediate neighbours. Due to their isolation Chuetas ’ genetic diversity was expected to be considerably low. Contrary to this, diversity found in most of the markers studied show that the diversity in this population is as high as in other Jewish or islander populations studied to date. Only in haploid markers, discrimination capacity is significan tly low.

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the efficacy of chitosan oligosaccharide administrations in different doses of experimental infected lambs with Cryptosporidium parvum. 32 male lambs were used in the study and the lambs were divided into 4 groups with 8 lambs in each group. Groups 1, 2 and 3, twice a day, were administered chitosan oligosaccharide at a dose of 100, 500, and 1000 mg/kg for 7 days, respectively, with milk replacer. In group 4, lambs with cryptosporidiosis were subjected to normal feeding as control without drug administration. Clinical examinations of lambs were made before treatment (day 0)...

by Bruno C ésar Miranda Oliveira, Katia Denise Saraiva Bresciani, Giovanni Widmer Based on our initial observations showing that mice consuming a probiotic product develop more severe cryptosporidiosis, we investigated the impact of other dietary interventions on the intracellular proliferation ofCryptosporidium parvum andC.tyzzeri in the mouse. Mice were orally infected with oocysts and parasite multiplication measured by quantifying fecal oocyst output. High-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA amplicons was used to correlate oocyst output with diet and with the composition of the intestinal microbiota. On ...

CONCLUSIONS: As drinking water in Israel is treated to maximal international standards, the rationale for further inclusion of Cryptosporidium among mandatory notifiable diseases should be reconsidered. Future surveillance efforts should focus on timely detection of outbreaks using molecular high-throughput testing. PMID: 31542902 [PubMed - in process]

Publication date: Available online 5 September 2019Source: Journal of Membrane ScienceAuthor(s): Weiying Li, Wanqi Qi, Jiping Chen, Wei Zhou, Yue Li, Yiran Sun, Kai DingAbstractThe diarrhoea-causing parasitic protozoan Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) cannot be efficiently removed by conventional drinking water treatment and poses a biological threat to public health. To ensure the biological safety, three kinds of metallic membranes, laminating metal mesh filter, non-woven metal filter and sintered metal fiber filter were employed to compare their properties. The results showed that the sintered membrane possessed the b...
