The weight loss project – 1 year anniversary

Without a master plan, I started the project one year ago during a wedding weekend in Santa Fe. The project started with a goal of 8 pounds. I had two plans: walk 3-5 miles each day (in addition to my regular walking) and cut some calories out of each day. The project started that simply. That weekend I download map my walk to help me track my walking. When I returned home that Sunday, I had lost 2 pounds. What happened over the year? First, I stuck to small achievable goals. My most common goal was 5 more pounds. At first I did not have an ultimate goal. I focused mostly on a process. The portion control has had several constants. I generally avoid high sugar, high calorie choices (although I will allow myself the occasional excellent dessert). I decided very early to avoid donuts (which I really love). When I am full, I stop eating (at least most times). Often I order smaller portions, and often split a sandwich with a golf buddy after a round. When I eat hamburger, I generally eschew the bun. Each day I try to understand my eating strategy for that day, knowing that I can eat more early when I am not going out with friends for dinner. Walking morphed into walk run walk, then run walk run, and now mostly run. I obsessively track my runs, my steps and my weight. When running, I developed a plan to run a 5k.
