Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Margins: The Case of Ana Ortega, a Relational Perspective

This article describes the 4-year treatment in a community setting of a woman who experienced significant childhood trauma that she replayed in her adult life. The case is presented through a relational lens with particular attention to enactments, the transference/countertransference matrix, and the inevitable participation of the therapist in the treatment. The case will demonstrate how the roles enacted by the therapist and patient allowed for therapeutic space to be opened to facilitate mutual recognition between therapist and patient.
