Cardiovascular PET/MRI: Initial Clinical Experience

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe study aims to give a review of the current state of cardiovascular hybrid PET/MRI and to outline its evolution in near future.Recent FindingsProof of feasibility of cardiovascular hybrid PET/MRI has been provided for different cardiovascular pathologies using [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) as tracer; hybrid FDG PET/MRI allows in acute myocardial infarction the visualization of the area-at-risk of infarction, and initial studies show the prognostic value of PET/MRI concerning functional recovery in acute myocardial infarction. FDG PET/MRI enables the detection of inflammation in viral myocarditis; however, its clinical benefit is still unexplored. In sarcoidosis, cardiac PET/MRI provides a higher diagnostic accuracy compared to PET and MRI alone. PET/MRI shows an improved specificity concerning the differentiation between benign and malignant cardiac tumors compared to PET and MRI alone.SummaryCardiovascular PET/MRI is feasible, and initial studies show promising results and suggest an added value of hybrid PET/MRI over PET and MRI alone.
