Teleflex to close N.C. plant, lay off 104

Teleflex (NYSE:TFX) is looking to shutter a North Carolina facility, with plans to lay off 104 employees at the facility. The company’s Ashboro subsidiary Arrow said in May it had plans to lay off 84 employees at the facility, and filed again last month with plans to lay off another 20. The layoffs are expected to go into effect in October. The company said it had 635 employees in Asheboro when it originally announced the impending closure in 2014. The layoffs come as the company plans to move its manufacturing operation from Asheboro to Mexico and the Czech Republic, according to a Triangle Business Journal report. The move is part of a companywide restructuring plan to consolidate its manufacturing and reduce its U.S. workforce. The Asheboro facility is expected to be completely closed by 2017. In August, Teleflex said it launched its 2nd-generation Percuvance percutaneous surgical system designed for percutaneous laparoscopic procedures in the U.S. The company said that along with the launch, the 1st clinical use of the device, in a sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and laparoscopic gastric band removal, were recently performed at the Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery. The newly released system features interchangeable 5mm tool tips and a quick-connect system for changing tool-tips while the system is outside the body.
