Celebrating animal blood donors

THE Royal Veterinary College marked World Blood Donor Day on June 14 by drawing attention to the role of blood transfusions in animals. World Blood Donor Day is organised by the World Health Organisation to highlight the importance of blood donations to help save human lives. However, the RVC pointed out, ‘It's not just humans whose lives can be changed by blood donations. Unbeknown to many people, thousands of animals’ lives are saved too, and there is an increasing need for dog and cat donors.’ To celebrate the day, the RVC has created a ‘Blood Donor of the Year’ award. This year's winner was Raisin, a Labrador and hearing dog owned by Ann Fort, which, the college explains, donated blood to eight dogs during his two years on the RVC's blood donor programme.
