Lower extremity amputations from diabetes and/or peripheral artery disease (PAD) are a significant cause of morbidity, functional impairments, and reduced quality of life (QOL).1,2 With the increased incidence of diabetes, the number of amputations performed in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) increased by over 40% from 2008 to 2018.3 The overall healthcare burden of amputation is projected to rise with the increasing prevalence of diabetes and PAD.4
