Editorial Commentary: The Gold Standard for Assessment of Hip Instability Is 3-Dimensional Imaging

Radiographs have been used for more than a century as standard practice to diagnose bony pathology. Although cost-efficient, their limitations to display 3-dimensional structures may compromise our ability to correctly diagnose —and treat correspondingly—conditions of the hip that cause microinstability and ultimately lead to cartilage wear. Several radiographic measurements—such as the lateral center-edge angle, anterior center-edge angle, Tönnis angle, crossover sign, etc.—have historically been used to determin e instability.
