Characterisation of the fig-fig wasp holobiont

Biosystems. 2024 Feb 21:105162. doi: 10.1016/j.biosystems.2024.105162. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlants and animals have long been considered distinct kingdoms, yet here a hitherto undefined 'plant-animal' is described. In an extraordinary symbiosis in which neither organism can complete its lifecycle without the other, the fig tree (Ficus species) provides a habitat for its exclusive pollinator, the fig wasp (Agaonidae family). Characterisation of the 'fig-fig wasp holobiont' marks the first acknowledgement of plant-animal symbiogenesis.PMID:38395103 | DOI:10.1016/j.biosystems.2024.105162
