Is there an Ideal Timing for Autologous Fat Grafting in Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction? Commentary on A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This meta-analysis was aimed to investigate patients ’ satisfaction with the timing of autologous fat grafting (AFG) in implant-based breast reconstruction and assess outcomes based on verified BREAST-Q scores to establish a set of best practices for the timing of fat grafting in breast reconstruction surgery. AFG can be done during the second stage of surgery along with expander-to-implant exchange, or during a separate third-stage procedure.1 Though second-stage AFG allows the patient to undergo fewer surgeries, drawbacks of this technique include a more complex recovery, as well as a potential need for additional procedures to improve the f inal aesthetic outcomes.
