Considerations and Recommendations for Hand Surgeons in Light of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Price Transparency Rulings

In 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) ruled that hospitals publish pricing data for at least 300 shoppable services, including 70 CMS-specified services. This ruling intended to improve patient choice, access to pricing information, and curb costs for healthcare consumers by encouraging free market behavior in an increasingly expensive healthcare economy. However, due to poor enforcement, data reporting, and compliance, the ruling neither improved existing pricing disparities nor patient choice.
