Revisiting the vaginal cuff check- Is it necessary?

Vaginal cuff dehiscence (VCD) is a rare but potentially catastrophic postoperative complication following total hysterectomy. As part of routine peri-operative care, it is a common practice to see patients at the 6-8 week post-operative mark for an in-person vaginal exam to evaluate the integrity of the vaginal cuff and look for any evidence of VCD before clearing patients from pelvic rest. However, does an exam in asymptomatic patients help us identify, better yet predict VCD, especially in light of the fact that there is a paucity of evidence demonstrating better outcomes?
