Prioritizing high quality care for women veterans: The time is now

Women military Veterans represent a growing population with unique healthcare needs. Women are the fastest-growing demographic of Veterans, with projections that women will comprise 18  % of all Veterans by the year 2040, as compared to 4 % in 2004 (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2020). In response to the projected increases in women Veterans, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) began developing targeted healthcare services for women Veterans over forty years ago. I n 1982, the U.S. General Accounting Office published a report entitled “Actions needed to insure that female Veterans have equal access to Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits,” which highlighted that women did not have equal access to VHA benefits, did not receive complete physical examinations or gy necological services, and did not have adequate information related to eligibility benefits (U.S.
