Intraoperative Challenges

Orthopedic surgeons face challenges on a daily basis, but none more so than during surgery. Although basic surgical techniques are standard to some extent, each patient is an individual, with a unique anatomy, body habitus, condition, and comorbidities, and requires individualized treatment; every technique requires fine-tuning to meet distinct needs. Surgery without the risk of complication does not exist regardless of the best laid plans. There are general risks of surgery and technique-specific risks, and some surgeries have a high probability of adverse events so much so that protocols have been put in place to avoid or treat problems as they arise.
