Round the bloc(k), again On a first viewing, a briskly walking pedestrian would barely have afforded the past-its-heyday demeanour of the Brownstone a second glance. Just before the intersection of 49th and 57th (you know the spot, the neglected swings on the right just before the lights) the loose rooftop slates only visible to the vertically unchallenged and, not in themselves, anything that might demand a change in pace, a closer look. Had she not been looking for affordable property, a surprise for her fiancé, a first home together for them both (once the wretched thesis and defence on instability in Yugoslavia was complete), then the paintwork on the door would never have caught her eye.
