Surgeons and MRI

Over the course of nearly two decades, encompassing dental school, an oral and maxillofacial surgery internship, medical school, medicine internship, radiology residency and pediatric subspecialty fellowship, and an instructor level faculty position, I have worked with several surgeons who are apprehensive and uncertain about the added value of MR imaging to CT. This apprehension leads to decreased ordering of MRI exams, precluding the detection of potentially significant findings. Given my experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery and my current role as a pediatric oncologic imager with specialization in CT-based 3D virtual surgical planning, I am keenly aware of the complementary benefits of both CT and MRI and understand the source of frustration among surgeons when sitting in front of the myriad of MRI sequences performed on their patients.
