“I Want My Bunion Back” 10 Years Later in the Era of Patient-Reported Outcomes

At the 2012 American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons Annual Scientific Conference, Luke Cicchinelli, DPM, FACFAS, presented a lecture titled “Doc, I Want My Bunion Back.” The presentation was the most unscientific presentation at the scientific meeting, yet it received a standing ovation at the end. The lecture was about questioning our perception of success, often influenced by “evidence-based medicine,” in bunion surgery (or an y surgery, for that matter). He argued that our perceptions of success often did not align with patients’ expectations.
