South Africa: Women in Health - 'No One Taught Me How to Treat a Sick System,' Says Leading Young Professor

[spotlight] In high school, a guidance councillor told Salome Maswime that she would never be accepted at medical school. Undeterred, in 2001, Maswime successfully enrolled for an MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Today an obstetrician and gynaecologist, a professor and head of Global Surgery at the University of Cape Town (UCT), and President of the South African Clinician Scientists Society, Maswime is a beacon of excellence and a role-model to many.
