Most pregnant women living on the Hawaiian islands of Lanai and Molokai must relocate to Honolulu in the weeks before their deliveries due to maternity care shortages on their islands. Even islands with maternity care are often not able to care for pregnancies with complications. Expenses associated with relocation are usually not covered by insurance and women leave behind their support systems, impacting their mental health.
