The Shifting View of Automation in Healthcare with Matt Dickson from Stericycle

As I think about my years in health IT, tech people have always been interested in automation.  It’s one of the beauties of many technologies.  You can automate processes in ways that weren’t previously possible.  However, the same wasn’t always true for healthcare workers.  Some people in healthcare saw automation as a threat to their jobs.  Many clinicians were afraid of automation since they didn’t think they could trust it with something as important as patient care.  Others just simply didn’t want to deal with the changes that came with automation. While some of these views still prevail, each of these views is starting to change in a big way as more and more healthcare organizations are embracing automation.  In fact, many healthcare organizations are embracing automation out of necessity.  Some organizations can’t find the right staff and so they need technology automation to help them augment their staff.  Others see technology as the key to embracing new patient demands for convenience.  Either way, automation has become a trusted path forward for healthcare organizations.
