From vitamin C therapy to acupuncture: Natural ways to prevent and ease shingles

(Natural News) Even though at least one in three people will develop shingles, or herpes zoster, in their lifetime, there are only a handful of effective remedies for the viral disease. A person develops shingles when latent varicella-zoster/chickenpox virus reactivates along the sensory nerves in the skin. The symptoms of shingles include painful blisters that last for about...

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a member of Herpesviridae family. It can cause two distinct clinical entities: varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles).1,2Herpes Zoster(HZ) is painful, vesicular rash in a limited area on one side of body due to the reactivation of latent VZV in dorsal root ganglia.Involvement of three or more dermatomes is known as disseminated zoster and seen in immunocompromised individuals. It can occur at any age. The risk of herpes zoster increases with old age and in patients with reduced cell mediated immunity such as haematological malignancies, immunosuppressive therapies, HIV infection ...

Herpes zoster (HZ) and its main complication, postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), constitute an important health problem, reducing the quality of life of patients, and increasing healthcare costs (1). Many patients with PHN develop severe physical, occupational and social disabilities because of enduring pain (2). HZ or shingles is caused by the reactivation of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), which remains latent in sensory nerve ganglia following the primary infection (chickenpox). This reactivation causes a localized eruption of vesicular lesions and the presence of pain and inflammation of the affected nerve root (3).

(Natural News) A case study published in the journal Pediatric Dermatology looked at shingles cases that occurred in healthy children that were vaccinated for chickenpox. In the study, the authors looked at cases of shingles that were initially thought to be skin rashes. The authors looked at seven cases of children who contracted herpes zoster (shingles) at the...

Primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox, following which the virus establishes latency. It reactivates in up to 25% of individuals to cause the painful dermatomal rash known as shingles (herpes zoster). During chickenpox or shingles, viral DNA is detectable in skin lesions, blood and saliva [1,2]. Viral replication is accompanied by boosting of VZV antibodies consistent with antigenic, or endogenous, boosting. Few data exist, however, confirming the relationship between viral load and antibody titres during, and following, acute clinical VZV disease.

We report the first application of ultra-deep sequencing (UDS) to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) genotypic antiviral testing in a case of acyclovir-resistant VZV infection initially detected by Sanger sequencing within a deeply immunocompromised heart transplant recipient. As added-value compared to Sanger analysis, UDS revealed complex dynamics of viral population under antiviral pressure. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a ubiquitous human herpesvirus affecting populations worldwide. VZV is commonly acquired in youth whose primary infection usually manifests as benign varicella (chickenpox). After the initial infection, the...
